Hel Peninsula · base for exploring

Hel Peninsula from inside

What's worth seeing from Apartament Zdrojowy 323

35 km of sandbar · 5 villages · 50 m to the beach

The apartment sits in Jastarnia - exactly in the middle of the 35-kilometre Hel Sandbar, the strip of land that separates the Baltic from the Gulf of Puck. The sea is visible from the balcony; the beach is a 50-metre walk, the train station a 15-minute one. From here the entire coast from Władysławowo to Hel is reachable by train, car, bicycle or on foot. The Tricity is 1 hour 40 minutes by car, faster by SKM commuter rail from Gdynia Główna. This guide shows what's actually worth seeing from a base at Hotel Dom Zdrojowy - without the "attractions" no local would bother with.

Jastarnia

Jastarnia isn't a seasonal beach resort like Sopot, nor a fishing village like Kuźnica - it's a small town with year-round life. The centre has a post office, two pharmacies, a doctor, a bank, a library and apartments rented year-round to people who simply live here. In July and August the population doubles with tourists, but from September Jastarnia quiets down and becomes a place where you can work remotely, run on wet sand before breakfast, or read by a window facing the pines.

The geography offers something rare: the Baltic beach is 50 metres north of the apartment, the Gulf of Puck beach 600 metres south. You can swim in the calm warm Gulf in the morning and catch Baltic waves in the afternoon - all without a car, in the same shoes. The pine forest behind town produces phytoncides and that famous "healing" scent sanatoriums have advertised for years. The microclimate really is different - IMGW data confirms more sunny days in season than the national average.

Jastarnia railway station is 600 metres from the apartment. POLREGIO runs daily to Hel (25 min), Władysławowo (15 min), Gdynia (1h 30min), Gdańsk (2h). You can live a full week without a car.

Beach

Most guests come to Jastarnia for the beaches, so it's worth knowing there are effectively two - and they do quite different jobs. The Baltic on the north side gives what you'd expect from the Polish sea: a wide sandy beach, waves, wind, a wild shoreline. Fine sand, colder water, lifeguards in season, red flags in July/August during strong winds (it happens). This is a beach for the active - long walks, runs, kitesurfing, surfing when the swell makes sense.

The Gulf of Puck on the south side is entirely different. Calm, shallow, sun-warmed - you can wade 100 metres out and still have water to your waist. Ideal with small children (zero waves, no sudden drops) and for anyone who'd rather swim than fight the current. From the Gulf beach in Jastarnia-Bór you can see Hel across the water, and in summer the kitesurfers (Kuźnica and Chałupy are a few kilometres away, but the wind carries sails visible even from here). The water is less salty than the open Baltic, the bottom sandy with shell fragments.

The apartment is 50 metres from the hotel beach (Baltic, privately reserved for guests of Dom Zdrojowy) and a 600-metre walk to the Gulf beach. You can check both in one day without a car.

5 villages · 35 km of sandbar · Tricity

Around

The Hel Sandbar is 35 kilometres long with 5 villages - each with a different character, each worth a separate day. Władysławowo at the start of the peninsula (10 km from Jastarnia) is a fishing port and the region's largest town with markets and countless smażalnias. Chałupy, 14 km further, is Poland's kitesurfing capital and a historic naturist beach (PRL-era scenes). Kuźnica - 5 km from the apartment - is the narrowest point of the sandbar (300 metres of land between the Baltic and the Gulf), with Libek hill, the highest dune in the area. Jurata, 3 km from Jastarnia, is an exclusive interwar resort with a presidential villa and a pine forest by the beach. Hel at the end (30 km from the apartment, 25 minutes by train) has the seal sanctuary, lighthouse, 1930s defensive bunkers and the fisheries museum.

The Tricity - Gdańsk, Sopot, Gdynia - is 1 hour 40 minutes by car or faster by SKM commuter rail from Gdynia Główna. Each city has its own character: Gdańsk is renaissance Old Town and museums, Sopot is the pier and forest opera, Gdynia is the modernist port. From the apartment, each can be done in a single day.

Things to do

The Hel Peninsula has three clusters of things to do that aren't tourist traps. The first is water sports - the Gulf of Puck is one of the best kitesurfing destinations in Europe with steady winds from April through November. Kuźnica and Chałupy have schools with certified instructors, gear rental, beginner courses from your first hour on the beach. Windsurfing and wing-foil have been here for years too, kayaking on the Gulf on calm days - waters practically left to themselves.

The second is cruises from the Jastarnia fishing port (600 m from the apartment). Season May to September - observation cruises for seals (the colony is at Hel, but you also encounter them on the way), seabirds (terns, cormorants, dozens of migratory species in season), classic scenic cruises and angling trips. Booking through the port site or in person in the morning during season.

The third is museums and history - Hel has the Fisheries Museum in a restored church, the Seal Sanctuary of the University of Gdańsk's Marine Station with grey seal, the lighthouse open for tours, defensive bunkers from 1939 (Battery Lasek, Hel Fortress). For anyone interested in the interwar period or WWII, Hel is a full day with no dull moments. Everything described in detail on the Hel page.
