A spa town with the longest pier in Europe
Sopot
Sopot lies 65 km south of Jastarnia - about 1 hour 15 minutes by car or roughly 1.5 hours by train (changing in Gdynia for the SKM). It is the most famous seaside resort in Poland, known for the longest wooden pier in Europe, the Monte Cassino promenade and a rich cultural life. Sitting between Gdansk and Gdynia, Sopot is easy to combine with a visit to either city.
What to see in Sopot?
Sopot Pier (511.5 m)
The longest wooden pier in Europe, first built in 1827 and rebuilt several times since. Admission is charged - from the end of the pier you get a view across the entire Gulf of Gdansk.
Monte Cassino Street (Monciak)
The main promenade of Sopot running from the train station to the pier. Cafes, galleries, street music - the social heart of the town.
Crooked House (Krzywy Domek)
A building with a distorted facade, designed by Szotynscy and Zaleski, inspired by illustrations of Jan Marcin Szancer. Houses restaurants and pubs.
Forest Opera
An amphitheatre in pine forest, home to the Top of the Top Sopot festival (successor to Sopot Festival). Summer concerts with natural acoustics.
Sopot beaches
Wide sandy beaches on both sides of the pier. Lifeguard-patrolled in summer, with food outlets. Less crowded away from the pier area.
Grand Hotel (historic spa building)
A 19th-century spa building by the pier. Now a hotel and restaurant - worth seeing for the architecture alone.
What is Sopot like after sunset?
Sopot has functioned as a spa town since the 19th century - its tradition of brine baths and sea cures dates back to Prussian times. Modern Sopot blends that heritage with a lively entertainment scene. In summer the Monciak buzzes with life late into the night, and beach bars and clubs stay open until dawn.
Outside the season Sopot has an entirely different character - a quiet spa town with tree-lined walks in the forest and empty beaches. It is a good time for a long stroll along the pier without crowds and a coffee in one of the intimate cafes on the side streets off the Monciak.
