34 km of sand, pine trees and sea air

Hel Peninsula

The Hel sandbar is a narrow strip of land separating the open Baltic from the shallow Bay of Puck. Across its 34 kilometres you will find five towns, two seas of very different character, a pine forest releasing phytoncides, and a microclimate that has drawn visitors for over a century. It is one of the few places in Poland where the temperature rarely exceeds 25°C on a hot day.

What does Natura 2000 protect on the Hel Peninsula?

The Hel Peninsula is protected under Natura 2000 - both as a natural habitat and a bird sanctuary. Rare species of marram grass and sea holly grow on the dunes. Baltic harbour porpoises - the only cetacean population in Polish waters - inhabit the Bay of Puck.

The pine forests of the sandbar are not just scenery. Phytoncides released by the trees have documented antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. They lower blood pressure, reduce cortisol and support the immune system. A walk through the Hel forest is more than just recreation.

Why is the air on the spit therapeutic?

The air on the Hel sandbar is saturated with iodine and sea-salt aerosols - it works like natural inhalation therapy, beneficial for allergies, asthma and chronic sinusitis. The salinity of the Bay of Puck is 7–8 PSU (less than the open sea, but enough for a health effect). The water is slightly alkaline (pH 7.5–7.8), gentle on the eyes and skin.

In summer the air temperature ranges between 18 and 22°C, while the sea reaches 18–20°C in August. The UV index is only 4–5 (moderate) - significantly lower than the Mediterranean or the Persian Gulf.

How long is the cycle path on the Hel Peninsula?

A 30-kilometre asphalt cycle path runs from Władysławowo to the tip of the peninsula at Hel, fully separated from road traffic and lit in the evening. Benches, bins, bike repair stations and nature information boards line the route. The trail is flat - ideal for families with children and older visitors.

What health benefits does a stay by the Baltic bring?

Iodine

Absorbed through the respiratory tract - supports thyroid function, metabolism and cognitive performance.

Mineral salts

Sea bathing combined with sun exposure helps with acne, eczema, psoriasis and seborrhoeic hair loss.

Pine phytoncides

Volatile organic compounds with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. They lower blood pressure and cortisol levels.

Salt aerosols

Natural inhalation therapy - beneficial for dust allergies, mild asthma and chronic sinusitis.

Vitamin D

Clean air (no smog barrier) enables natural vitamin D synthesis even during brief beach exposure.

Red blood cells

Studies show a 5–20% increase in haemoglobin levels after regular sea bathing.
