Full-day plan · 15 km from Jastarnia

What to see in Hel in one day from Apartament Zdrojowy 323

In one day in Hel you can see the essentials: the Hel Lighthouse with a Baltic panorama, the Baltic grey seals at the University of Gdańsk Marine Station, the Fishery Museum in a former Gothic church with a viewing tower, and the bunkers of the Coastal Defence Museum from September 1939. It is the closest and cheapest day-trip from your base at Apartament 323 - about 15 kilometres along the Peninsula, a quarter-hour by train, ticket a few złoty one-way. A plan for guests already spending several days in Jastarnia looking for the closest, most Cashubian neighbour for a full day.

Getting there from Jastarnia

Easiest by train - Polregio direct from Jastarnia to Hel, about 15 minutes, ticket 5-7 PLN one-way. In season 12-15 connections daily, off-season 6-8. By car 20 minutes on an empty road, but in July-August after 11:00 the Jastarnia - Hel stretch can clog with shuttle tourist traffic, and parking in central Hel fills up too. The train avoids both problems for the price of a city bus ticket.

  • 15 km from Apartament Zdrojowy 323
  • By car: about 20 min
  • By train (Polregio / SKM): about 15 min
  • By bus: about 20 min

From Jastarnia to Hel

  • Departure: 09:35 from Jastarnia (Polregio on the Władysławowo - Hel line, direct)
  • Route: direct train, 4 stops along the Peninsula (Jurata, Kuźnica, Chałupy, Władysławowo - some connections with transfer, but most direct)
  • Arrival: ok. 09:50 Hel station
  • Travel time: ok. 12-15 min
  • Ticket: ok. 5-7 PLN / person one-way (online on rozkladpkp.pl or at the Jastarnia ticket desk)
  • Frequency: in season 12-15 connections daily, off-season 6-8

After arrival at Hel station - 600 metres walk along ul. Wiejska straight to the centre of the town and the first stop of the plan (Hel Lighthouse). No parking, no stress with the Władysławowo - Hel jam in July-August, no 35 PLN/day parking fee in the centre.

Return from Hel to Jastarnia

  • Recommended train: 17:53 from Hel
  • Arrival: ok. 18:08 Jastarnia
  • Ticket: ok. 5-7 PLN / person one-way

Łączny koszt biletów (tam i z powrotem): ok. 14 zł / osoba.

Plusy wariantu pociągowego

  • Cheapest day-trip in the hub - return ticket 14 PLN / person vs 60-70 PLN by car (fuel + parking)
  • No stress with parking in the centre of Hel, which fills up by 11:00 in July-August
  • No jam on the Władysławowo - Hel stretch - tourist shuttle traffic can add 30-60 min in peak season
  • Train time = chat time, hotel coffee, podcast - the quarter-hour passes unnoticed
  • You can comfortably order a beer for lunch at Maszoperia without alcohol-limit calculations
  • Ecologically - one train instead of a thousand cars on a Peninsula-wide strip
  • Hel station = terminus, you step off knowing you didn't miss the stop

Co warto wiedzieć

  • Earlier start: 9:25 walk to Jastarnia station vs 9:30 from the parking - minimal difference
  • Hard return schedule - off-season last train ~19:30, no evening flexibility
  • In peak season trains can be crowded (July-August, weekends) - first class is not an option here, just earlier slot or more patience
  • Off-season (November-March) lower frequency - check exact times the day before
  • No flexibility if the day plan slips - taxi from Hel to Jastarnia ~80-120 PLN (vs ~250-350 PLN from Gdynia)
  • With stroller or baggage 600 m from station to centre is walkable, but add 10 min vs car to the restaurant

Bursztynowy Dwór

Restaurant in a stylish fishermen's manor - elaborate menu of Baltic fish, fish soup, baked cod, herring in old-Polish style. Manor atmosphere, wood-panelled interior, fireplace. Booking recommended on weekends, mid-week walk-in OK.

Practical tips

Best time to go

May, June or September are the best window - full attraction season, but without the July-August crowd. In peak season Hel can host 30 thousand tourists daily - streets clogged, queues at museums, parking full. The Polregio train solves the parking problem, but it's still worth getting up earlier (departure 8:30 instead of 9:30) to avoid the crowd at the Marine Station. In season (until 6 Sept 2026) the Fishery Museum is open daily 10:00-18:00, and on Thursdays the permanent exhibition is free. Winter Hel is surreal: the lighthouse visible from both sides of the Peninsula, empty beach, seals still in the Marine Station, snow-covered bunkers. A plan for guests staying at Apartament 323 for an off-season SPA weekend - Hel as an alternative to a quiet day at the hotel.

What to pack

  • Comfortable shoes - 6-8 km daily on sand, asphalt, bunkers
  • Wind jacket - the Hel headland exposed to all four directions
  • Sunscreen + hat in season - lighthouse with no shade, bay beach too
  • Train ticket bought online (rozkladpkp.pl) or at Jastarnia desk - less stress
  • Card + 100 PLN cash - museum and Marine Station ticket desks
  • Online booking for the Marine Station in July-August (option - the ticket desk queue can be long)
  • Camera - grey seals are a photo-worthy attraction, the lighthouse balcony too

What to book ahead

  • Marine Station UG: online booking optional, recommended on July-August - the ticket desk also works, but with a queue
  • Restaurant Bursztynowy Dwór: booking recommended on weekends, mid-week usually walk-in
  • Maszoperia, Dorszownia, Chata Rybaka: no booking, queue in July-August
  • Fishery Museum and Coastal Defence Museum: ticket at the entrance, no booking (Fishery Museum open daily until 6 Sept 2026)
  • Hel Lighthouse: ticket at the entrance, in season last entry 18:30
  • Polregio Jastarnia → Hel: ticket online (rozkladpkp.pl) or at the desk - check the schedule in the morning before departure (off-season lower frequency)

Photos along the route

A handful of photos from the plan stops - a sense of place before you set off.

Frequently asked questions

What to see in Hel in one day?

For a single day in Hel, the Hel Lighthouse with a Baltic panorama, the Baltic grey seals at the University of Gdańsk Marine Station, the Fishery Museum in a former Gothic church with a viewing tower, and the bunkers of the Coastal Defence Museum from September 1939 are enough. On the way it is worth dropping into the fishing port for fresh fish.

How long is the trip from Jastarnia to Hel?

Easiest by train: Polregio runs direct from Jastarnia to Hel in about 12-15 minutes, ticket 5-7 PLN one-way, 12-15 connections a day in season. By car it is about 15 km and 20 minutes on an empty road, but in summer the route along the Peninsula can clog.

Should I go to Hel by train or by car?

By train, clearly. Polregio avoids the jam on the narrow Peninsula and the parking problem in central Hel, which fills up by 11:00 in July and August. A return ticket is a dozen-or-so złoty, and it is about a 600-metre walk from Hel station to the centre.

How much is admission to the Hel attractions?

Roughly: Hel Lighthouse 14 PLN, the Marine Station with seals 25 PLN, the Fishery Museum 26 PLN (with the tower), the Coastal Defence Museum combined ticket 25 PLN; reduced prices are lower. Walking the port and Bulwar Nadmorski is free. Confirm current prices on the venues' websites before your visit.

Can you do Hel as a day-trip from Jastarnia?

Yes - it is the shortest and cheapest full-day outing from your base at Apartament Zdrojowy 323. You leave in the morning by train, see the lighthouse, the seals and the museums, eat fish, and head back to the hotel SPA in the afternoon - all in one day without repacking your luggage.
