The narrowest point of the Hel Peninsula
Kuźnica
Kuźnica sits about 5 km north-west of Jastarnia - 10 minutes by car, 15 minutes by bike along the forest cycle path, or one stop on the POLREGIO train. In the 19th century it was the most populated settlement on the entire spit; today it's a fishing quarter of Jastarnia with an unmistakably rural feel. This is where the peninsula narrows to just around 150 m between the open Baltic and Puck Bay.
How does Kuźnica differ from the rest of the peninsula?
Kuźnica has held onto something most resorts have lost - 19th-century fishermen's cottages, two small marinas, and the near-century-old Church of St. Anthony. Instead of a souvenir boulevard you'll find narrow lanes, fishermen returning at dawn, and restaurants chalking up the day's catch on a board at the door.
Because the peninsula is narrowest here, one glance takes in both the open sea and the quiet bay - a rare view on the Polish coast. That's also why Kuźnica is a favourite with birdwatchers: the spit is a key stop on the Baltic migration route.
What to see in Kuźnica?
Libek Hill
The highest dune on the peninsula - from the top you see both the Baltic and Puck Bay at once. Reached on the blue trail through the forest, about fifteen minutes on foot.
Church of St. Anthony
A nearly hundred-year-old church in the village centre - simple, wooden, with Kashubian ornament. Open during Mass and at the outdoor altar in summer.
Fishing harbour
A small marina on the bay side - fresh fish from the cutter on the right, cutters returning from the catch on the left. In summer you can rent a pedalo or join an angling trip.
Baltic beach
A wide ribbon of fine white sand, quieter than in Jastarnia. The guarded swim zone runs in July and August.
Kitesurfing and windsurfing
Puck Bay off Kuźnica is a shallow, warm lagoon with a sandy bottom - ideal for beginners. Several schools offer equipment and courses.
Historic fishermen's cottages
Individual 19th-century wooden houses preserved in their original form - scattered around the village, best discovered on a stroll down the side lanes.
