A modernist city by the sea

Gdynia

Gdynia lies 55 km south of Jastarnia - one hour by car or about 1.5 hours by train. Built almost from scratch in the 1920s and 1930s, it is one of the youngest major cities in Poland. Modernist architecture, a bustling port and the cliff at Orlowo create a city with a completely different character to historic Gdansk.

What to see in Gdynia?

Kosciuszko Square

The main promenade of Gdynia running from the centre to the port. Fountains, cafes and a view across the bay - the natural heart of the city.

Emigration Museum

Housed in the former Marine Station, from where 20th-century emigrants set out for America. An interactive exhibition on the waves of Polish emigration.

Sea Towers

Two towers (138 m) designed in the shape of sails - the dominant feature of modern Gdynia. Visible from afar, especially from the sea.

ORP Blyskawica

A historic World War II destroyer moored at the Pomeranian Quay. A museum ship open to visitors.

Dar Pomorza

A museum tall ship (frigate) built in 1909. For decades it served as a training vessel of the Polish Navy.

Gdynia Aquarium (MIR)

The aquarium of the Marine Fisheries Institute. An exhibition of Baltic and ocean fauna - a good option on a rainy day.

Where are the best viewpoints in Gdynia?

The Orlowo cliff is the highest sea cliff on the western shore of the Gulf of Gdansk - about 60 m tall. A walking path along the edge leads through beech forest with views over the sea. At the foot of the cliff lies a pebble beach and the historic Orlowo pier (450 m long).

Kamienna Gora is a viewpoint in central Gdynia - 75 m above sea level. From the terrace you can see a panorama of the port, the bay and on clear days even the Hel Peninsula. The walk from the centre takes about 15 minutes uphill.
