Full-day plan · 90 km from Jastarnia

What to see in Gdańsk in one day from Apartament Zdrojowy 323

In one day from the Hel Peninsula you can see the essentials of Gdańsk: the Main Town with Długi Targ and the Neptune Fountain, ul. Mariacka, the Museum of the Second World War, the European Solidarity Centre and the Crane on the Motława. Leave at eight from the Hotel Dom Zdrojowy car park and be back for the hotel SPA before eight in the evening - a tightly timed plan with room for photos and coffee on the way. The plan also works by Polregio train for guests who would rather not drive the summer S6.

Getting there from Jastarnia

Fastest by car - 1h 50 min via Jastarnia → Władysławowo → Reda → S6 → Gdańsk. Polregio from Jastarnia to Gdańsk Główny ~1h 45 min (most summer connections direct, off-season transfer in Gdynia or Reda). In peak season (July-August) the train is often quicker than the car + zero parking stress in the Old Town.

  • 90 km from Apartament Zdrojowy 323
  • By car: about 90 min
  • By train (Polregio / SKM): about 100 min
  • By bus: about 120 min

From Jastarnia to Gdańsk Główny

  • Departure: 07:35 from Jastarnia (Polregio on the Hel - Gdynia line)
  • Route: in season many connections direct via Gdynia Główna; off-season transfer in Władysławowo or Reda
  • Arrival: 09:30 Gdańsk Główny
  • Travel time: ok. 1h 55 min
  • Ticket: ok. 30-35 PLN / person one-way (online at rozkladpkp.pl or bilety.intercity.pl)

After arrival at Gdańsk Główny - 8-minute walk along ul. Heweliusza and ul. Wały Jagiellońskie straight to ul. Długa and Stare Miasto. No car, no parking stress, the day starts immediately.

Return from Gdańsk to Jastarnia

  • Recommended train: 18:25 from Gdańsk Główny
  • Arrival: 20:25 Jastarnia
  • Ticket: ok. 30-35 PLN / person one-way
  • Last sensible connection: ok. 21:00-21:30 from Gdańsk Główny (in season; off-season last train ~20:00 - check rozkladjazdy.pl the evening before)
  • Summer trains can run 10-20 min late - add buffer if you plan an earlier SPA slot at the hotel

Łączny koszt biletów (tam i z powrotem): ok. 70 zł / osoba.

Plusy wariantu pociągowego

  • No stress with parking in the Old Town - especially valuable in July-August
  • You can comfortably order wine for lunch at Mandu or Velevetka without alcohol-limit calculations
  • Train time = relaxed time (book, podcast, nap) instead of focusing on the S6
  • Ecologically - one train instead of a thousand cars on the Władysławowo - Gdynia stretch
  • Cheaper than driving: ~70 PLN tickets vs ~50 PLN parking + ~80 PLN fuel = 130 PLN by car
  • A chance to see Pomerania through local eyes - SKM Trójmiasto is a slice of residents' daily life

Co warto wiedzieć

  • Earlier start: 07:35 from Jastarnia vs 08:00 by car - hotel breakfast must be taken faster (from 7:00)
  • Hard return schedule - last sensible train ~21:00-21:30, no evening flexibility
  • 8-minute walk from Gdańsk Główny to Stare Miasto - with a stroller or baggage less practical
  • In peak season trains can be crowded (July-August, weekends) - first class an option
  • Off-season (November-March) lower frequency - check exact times the day before
  • No flexibility for delays / late returns - taxi from Gdańsk to Jastarnia ~280-380 PLN if the plan slips

Practical tips

Best time to go

May-June or September are the perfect window - warm enough, longer days, smaller crowds than July-August. In peak season the Old Town can feel like Venice in summer - go before 10:00 or after 17:00. Mondays = Museum of WWII closed (move to Tuesday-Sunday). St. Dominic's Fair (early August, 2-3 weeks) fills the city with stalls and tourists - great for atmosphere, hard for parking. The Christmas market on Długi Targ (late November to 23 December) is the best off-season reason to visit.

What to pack

  • Comfortable shoes - 8-10 km daily on cobblestones, the Old Town is no place for heels
  • Rainproof jacket - Baltic weather changes within an hour
  • Sunscreen + hat in season - ul. Długa and Motława with no shade
  • Backpack for souvenirs + water bottle
  • Card + min. 100 PLN cash - museum kiosks, water tram, milk bar Neptun preferring small change
  • Booking confirmed online for the Museum of WWII in peak season weekends (slot reservation possible)

What to book ahead

  • Museum of WWII: online booking possible, recommended on July-August weekends
  • Westerplatte: free entry, no booking needed, just check water tram timetable in season
  • Restaurant for dinner on weekend: booking same-day works (Mandu, Mestwin), Velevetka 2-3 days ahead
  • The Crane and Sołdek: ticket at the entrance, no booking
  • Polregio Jastarnia → Gdańsk Główny: buy ticket online (rozkladpkp.pl) or at the station - schedule worth checking the day before

Frequently asked questions

What is there to see in Gdańsk in one day?

For a single day the Main Town is enough: Długi Targ with the Neptune Fountain, the Town Hall, Artus Court, amber-lined ul. Mariacka and St Mary's Basilica. Add one large museum - the Museum of the Second World War or the European Solidarity Centre - and a walk along the Long Embankment to the Crane on the Motława.

How long is the drive from Jastarnia to Gdańsk?

About 1.5 hours by car (roughly 90 km via Władysławowo - Reda - S6). The Polregio train from Jastarnia to Gdańsk Główny takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. For a full day of sightseeing with a flexible evening return, the car is more convenient.

Can you really see Gdańsk in one day?

Yes, if you focus on the Main Town and pick one or two museums. An eight-to-eight plan covers the old town walk, lunch and a museum visit without rushing. You will not fit all of Gdańsk (Oliwa, Westerplatte, the Brzeźno beaches) into one day - that is a separate trip.

Train or car to Gdańsk?

The car is faster and gives you freedom for a late return to the hotel SPA. The train spares you the stress of parking in the centre and runs straight to Gdańsk Główny. If you plan to return after dark, choose the car.

How much does a day in Gdańsk cost?

Most of the Main Town you can see from the outside for free. Optional entries are paid - for example St Mary's Basilica tower around 12-14 zł or the Town Hall (Museum of Gdańsk) around 25 zł - plus parking around 30 zł a day and lunch. Confirm tickets for the large museums on their own websites before your visit.
