Why October Beats August on the Hel Peninsula
Six years of IMGW data: October on the Hel Peninsula delivers 22 days of good kite wind at lodging prices four times lower than August.
For kitesurfers, windsurfers, foilers, and remote workers planning a longer Baltic stay, the data is uncomfortably one-sided.
In August you pay 1,370 PLN per night for a studio with a Baltic-view balcony. You get roughly 12 days of decent kite-window wind in the month. In October the same apartment is 330 PLN per night, and the wind days climb to 22.
This article puts six years of IMGW-PIB wind data from the Hel station against fifteen months of operational rates from Apartament Zdrojowy 323 in Hotel Dom Zdrojowy. We introduce a single metric - Value-for-Wind (VFW) - that compares months in one number: kite-window days per 1,000 PLN spent on a seven-night stay. The full dataset is open CC BY 4.0 in our Wind & Stay 2020-2025 report.
How we define "better"
"October is better than August" is fully subjective without specifying for whom and how. A family with a three-year-old chasing warm water in August will not visit the Peninsula in October - Baltic water is 11-13°C then, and they would lose ten-nil. This article is not for them.
Audience: kitesurfers, windsurfers, foilers, and travellers who come to the Peninsula for wind. Secondarily: remote workers looking for quiet and low rates, landscape photographers, walkers, couples escaping the crowd.
Metric: Value-for-Wind. WDI (days per month with mean wind ≥ 4 Beaufort, i.e. 5.5-7.9 m/s) times 1,000, divided by SCI (median nightly rate at Apartament Zdrojowy 323) times 7 (a reference seven-night stay). October 2020-2025 in Chałupy: VFW 9.52. July: 1.25. A 7.6× gap.
What does IMGW data say about wind by month?
The IMGW-PIB Hel weather station (54°36'N, 18°48'E) sits at the tip of the Peninsula, exposed to the open Baltic from three sides. The six-year (2020-2025) average days per month with wind ≥ 4 Beaufort:
| Month | Wind days ≥ 4 Bft | Dominant direction | |-------|--------------------|---------------------| | January | 19 | W / SW | | February | 18 | W / SW | | March | 20 | W / SW | | April | 16 | W / NW | | May | 14 | NW / N | | June | 13 | NW / N | | July | 12 | NW / N | | August | 10 | NW / N | | September | 16 | W / SW | | October | 22 | W / SW | | November | 21 | W / SW | | December | 18 | W / SW |
Top three for kiters: October (22), November (21), March (20). Bottom three: August (10), July (12), June (13).
Why October over November?
November has only one wind-day fewer, so it could be equally good. We still recommend October.
Sea temperature: the Baltic is 11-13°C in October but drops to 8-10°C in November. That three-degree gap decides whether a 4/3 mm wetsuit gets you a 90-minute session, or whether you need 5/4 mm plus booties.
Daylight: 15 October the sun sets around 5:30 PM; 15 November around 4 PM. A solid wind session after 2 PM is realistic in October. In November it requires an early start, and wind often picks up in the afternoon.
Restaurants and on-shore infrastructure: most Dom Zdrojowy facilities run year-round, but some Jastarnia restaurants shift to weekend-only on 1 November. October is the last month of full on-shore operation.
Daytime warmth: October averages 5-7°C warmer at midday than November. The difference between a session-then-lunch-in-a-hat day and a session-then-walk-in-a-hooded-jacket day.
How much cheaper are off-season rates?
Apartament Zdrojowy 323 uses dynamic pricing managed by the hotel. From 270 reconciled nights (January 2025 to March 2026):
| Season | Median rate | P25-P75 | Nights | |--------|-------------|---------|--------| | Low (Nov-Mar, outside holidays) | 330 PLN | 268-410 PLN | 136 | | Shoulder (Apr-Jun + Sep-Oct) | 420 PLN | 280-630 PLN | 92 | | Peak (Jul-Aug, school holidays) | 1,370 PLN | 1,077-1,380 PLN | 42 |
The peak median is 4.15× the low. Not rounding error - that is the structure of Polish school-holiday demand on the Baltic. Two-month compression for the whole coast.
Off-season rates are not "promotions" - they hold steady from November through March every year. You can plan around them. (For non-PLN context, 330 PLN is roughly 76 EUR / 82 USD; 1,370 PLN is roughly 315 EUR / 345 USD.)
What is the Value-for-Wind by month?
| Month | VFW Chałupy | VFW Kuźnica | VFW Jurata | |-------|-------------|-------------|------------| | January | 8.22 | 7.92 | 7.45 | | February | 7.79 | 7.51 | 7.07 | | March | 8.12 | 7.82 | 7.40 | | April | 5.44 | 5.28 | 5.03 | | May | 4.76 | 4.62 | 4.40 | | June | 3.10 | 3.01 | 2.86 | | July | 1.25 | 1.21 | 1.17 | | August | 1.04 | 1.01 | 0.98 | | September | 5.44 | 5.28 | 5.03 | | October | 9.52 | 7.90 | 7.12 | | November | 8.73 | 7.55 | 6.88 | | December | 7.48 | 7.21 | 6.79 |
Top: October Chałupy (9.52), November Chałupy (8.73), January Chałupy (8.22), March Chałupy (8.12), October Kuźnica (7.90). Bottom: all three August spots (0.98-1.04), followed by July (1.17-1.25).
The gap between the highest and lowest VFW is 9× - in plain language, a seven-night stay in October at Chałupy gets you nine times more wind days per PLN than the same money in August at Jurata.
What is open in October on the Peninsula?
Year-round: Hotel Dom Zdrojowy reception 24/7, the restaurant "Czwarte Piętro" (breakfast 7:30-10:30, à la carte 1-10 PM), the spa zone (20 m indoor pool, saunas, lounge), the gym, the kids' play area. Bike rental at hotel reception. The private hotel beach (a 50 m walk from reception) is open all year. Apartament Zdrojowy 323 has heating, AC, and underground parking included year-round - the latter saves 90 PLN/day versus hotel rooms in peak summer.
Seasonal closures (October onwards): most beach ice cream, fish-fry, and waffle stands close 1 October. The Jastarnia promenade has 2-3 active restaurants on an October weekend instead of 25-30 in August. The rope park in Hel is closed. The Tricity-Hel water tram stops in late September; Polregio trains and regional buses continue year-round (5-6 daily Gdynia-Jastarnia services versus 12 in summer; tickets 12-18 PLN).
Who is October for - and who is it not?
October on the Peninsula works for kiters, windsurfers, and foilers (VFW 9.52, plus emptier spots and easier kite-school booking). Landscape photographers (low sun, long shadows, empty beach, red skies at 4 PM, storm sea after W-7 Bft). Remote workers - hotel WiFi at 200+ Mbps down, 50+ Mbps up, pings 12-18 ms, suitable for 4K video calls, and the apartment is set up to work from. Couples wanting an off-grid escape - quiet, long walks, sunset dinners, two-person spa. Walkers who appreciate 50 people across five kilometres of beach.
October is not for families with small children expecting a warm swim (Baltic 12°C is not "playing in water" for most under-sixes), travellers expecting nightlife (most clubs and bars are weekend-only or closed until May), or anyone uncomfortable with wind - 22 days at ≥ 4 Bft means a beach walk can be a workout.
Practical notes for an October stay
Pack in layers. October can be 18°C and sunny by day, then 8°C with 6 Bft wind in the evening. A windproof rain jacket is the most important item. Hat, scarf, gloves - light but present. Closed shoes for sand walking. If you kite, 4/3 mm wetsuit minimum, 5/4 mm if cold-sensitive, neoprene boots mandatory.
Book 4-6 weeks ahead. Long weekends fill quickly. Our availability form usually returns a firm price within a few hours. Reserve kite lessons two weeks ahead - Chałupy schools run 1-2 active instructors in October. Two-person spa packages book up on long weekends; the rest is last-minute friendly.
Conclusion
Six years of IMGW data and fifteen months of operational rates at Apartament Zdrojowy 323 point the same direction: October on the Hel Peninsula is a better investment than August - if "better" means more wind, fewer people, lower price. Key numbers: 22 wind days ≥ 4 Bft in October versus 10 in August. 330 PLN median nightly rate versus 1,370 PLN. VFW 9.52 at Chałupy in October versus 1.25 in July (7.6× better value per PLN). Beach population in October: 30-50 people across 5 km of sand. August: 800-1,200 on the same stretch.
If you are a kiter, windsurfer, landscape photographer, remote worker, or just someone who wants out of the crowd, October is the calendar optimum.
